Windows 11 Camera Not Working?

Windows 11 webcam black screen or Camera app errors — privacy toggles, disabled devices, OEM camera drivers, exclusive app locks, and USB disconnect tricks.

9 min readWindows 11, webcam, camera

Windows 11 camera not working (black preview, “close other apps,” or no device found) is usually privacy, an app lock, or a bad camera driver — not a dead sensor. Work software first.

Quick map

Symptom Likely cause First move
Black screen, LED on App exclusive lock / effects glitch Kill Teams/Zoom/browser
“No camera found” Disabled device / driver Device Manager
Works in one app only Per-app permission Privacy → Camera
After update Generic driver replaced OEM Reinstall vendor package
Physical shutter closed Hardware privacy slide Open shutter

If audio died in the same wave of updates, fix both stacks — see Windows 11 no sound.

1. Privacy toggles (most common)

Settings → Privacy & security → Camera

  • Camera access = On
  • Let apps access your camera = On
  • Let desktop apps access your camera = On

Corporate laptops may hard-block this via policy. If toggles are greyed out, it is IT policy — not a driver download.

2. Close the exclusive lock

Webcams allow one primary client at a time on many laptops.

  1. Quit Teams / Zoom / Discord / Slack fully (tray icons too)
  2. Close browser tabs using meet.google.com / FaceTime web
  3. Open the Windows Camera app once
  4. Then reopen your meeting app and pick the camera again

Windows Studio Effects / NVIDIA Broadcast overlays can also hold the device — disable them for a test.

3. Device Manager

  1. Cameras or Imaging devices
  2. Enable anything disabled
  3. Uninstall the camera device → reboot → let Windows rebuild, then install OEM camera drivers from Dell/HP/Lenovo/ASUS

Skip random “webcam fixer” utilities.

4. Reset the Camera app

Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Camera → Advanced options → Reset

Then reboot and retest. If only Zoom fails, repair Zoom permissions separately — same idea as Zoom microphone issues.

5. USB webcam A/B test

Plug a cheap USB camera into a rear port (not a dead hub).

  • External works, built-in dead → onboard cable/sensor/driver for that device
  • External also dead → privacy policy, security software, or USB stack

Need a one-cable desk with HDMI while testing docks? A magnetic VENTION USB-C hub on Amazon keeps PD + display tidy — just do not diagnose a failing built-in cam through a flaky hub port.

Hardware path

After OEM drivers and privacy are clean:

  • Sliding privacy shutter stuck closed
  • Pinch cable after hinge / bezel work
  • Liquid near the webcam module

Careful bezel work needs proper bits — I recommend an 11-piece precision screwdriver set on Amazon instead of mixed phone drivers that strip hinge screws.

Do / Don’t

Do

  • Toggle Camera privacy for desktop apps
  • Close meeting apps before testing Camera
  • Install OEM imaging drivers

Don’t

  • Install three third-party webcam tools
  • Ignore a closed physical shutter
  • Quote a whole motherboard before an external USB test

Bottom line

Enable Camera privacy, release app locks, then reinstall the OEM imaging driver. Use a USB webcam to isolate onboard hardware. That sequence clears most Windows 11 black-camera tickets without a reset.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the Camera app black but the LED is on?

Often another app holds an exclusive lock, or the privacy shutter / Windows Studio Effects stack is stuck. Close Teams/Zoom/browser tabs and reopen Camera.

Camera works in Zoom but not in Camera app?

App-specific permission or a corrupted Camera app package. Reset the Camera app and confirm Settings → Privacy → Camera allows desktop apps.

Did a Windows update kill my webcam?

Sometimes. Updates can replace OEM camera drivers with generic ones. Reinstall the vendor camera / Imaging device package for your model.

External USB webcam also fails — is Windows broken?

If every USB camera fails across ports, look at privacy policy, antivirus webcam blockers, or a wider USB stack issue. If only the built-in fails, treat it as laptop hardware/driver.

When is it hardware?

Device Manager shows error code on the imaging device after clean OEM installs, or the cable was pinched after a hinge repair.
