What to Do Before Sending Your Phone for Repair (Checklist)

Protect your data and accounts before a phone repair — backup, remove SIM/eSIM notes, disable Find My when required, document damage, and avoid handing over unlocked banking apps.

8 min readphone repair, backup, Find My

Sending a phone for repair without prep is how people lose years of photos and an unlocked email. Use this checklist the night before — not in the parking lot while the tech waits.

1. Back up like the phone will not come back

iPhone

  • iCloud backup (Settings → [Name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup), or
  • Computer backup (Finder / Apple Devices) — encrypted backup keeps Health and passwords

Android

  • Google backup + Photos backup
  • Export WhatsApp/chat backups per WhatsApp before repair
  • Copy DCIM to a computer if the screen still works

Also export or screenshot authenticator / 2FA recovery codes. Follow move authenticator before repair. A repaired phone with a wiped app list is painful if codes lived only on‑device.

If the phone is already half‑dead, prioritize photo pull and cloud sync over perfect organization. For freezes/boot issues see force restart and Android boot loop.

2. Inventory what only exists on the phone

  • Local‑only videos
  • Signal / WhatsApp media not in cloud
  • Secure folder / locked vault apps
  • Offline maps, boarding passes, parking QR codes for tomorrow morning
  • Work certificates / VPN profiles

Write a 60‑second list. If it is not backed up, assume it can vanish.

3. Accounts and Activation Lock / FRP reality

Ask the shop what they need:

Platform Common request Your move
iPhone Find My off for some repairs Disable only when you trust the shop / Apple process
Android Google account for FRP on board swap Know the password; see FRP after repair
Either Passcode for testing Change it after pickup

Never email your Apple ID / Google password to a Gmail address the shop “just sent you.”

4. Before you hand it over

  1. Remove SIM if the tray still works (eSIM: note carrier transfer steps)
  2. Remove memory card
  3. Turn off lock screen widgets that show 2FA codes or calendar details if you must leave it unlocked for bench testing
  4. Log out of banking apps or enable app‑level locks
  5. Take photos of the phone: scratches, bent frame, missing screws — timestamped
  6. Get a work order: symptom, quoted parts, data‑loss risk, ETA, warranty on the repair
  7. Ask whether biometric features / True Tone / Battery Health messaging may change after parts work

5. Water damage special rules

  • Do not keep charging a wet phone “to back up one more time” if it is unsafe — power off
  • Say no to rice theater; prioritize professional drying and honesty about liquid indicators
  • Expect higher chance of data loss and secondary failures days later
  • Tell the shop exactly what liquid and when — sugar (soda) behaves worse than clean water

6. Pickup day — test before you leave

  1. Test touch, Face ID / fingerprint, cameras, mics, Wi‑Fi, charging, buttons in the shop
  2. Confirm IMEI / serial still matches your box or carrier record
  3. Change passcode / Google / Apple password if they had unlock access
  4. Re‑enable Find My
  5. Check that iCloud / Google Photos is syncing again
  6. Note any Important Parts messages (parts info) and biometric issues (Pixel fingerprint, Samsung fingerprint, Face ID)

Printable mini-list

  • Backup done and verified on another device
  • 2FA recovery codes saved offline
  • WhatsApp backup timestamp fresh
  • SIM / eSIM plan known
  • Damage photos taken
  • Work order signed (scope + data risk)
  • Find My / FRP decision made deliberately
  • Pickup functional test completed

Shop vs DIY honesty

If you are tempted to DIY a screen to “save money,” budget for tools, adhesive, and the risk of Face ID / fingerprint / True Tone loss. Independent shops earn their fee when they stock known‑good panels and stand behind biometrics. Apple/AASP earns its fee when you need clean pairing and genuine parts.

Do / Don’t

Do

  • Verify the backup opened on another device
  • Get wipe risk in writing
  • Test at the counter

Don’t

  • Hand over an unlocked phone full of OTP widgets
  • Assume “screen only” means zero data risk after water damage
  • Skip authenticator migration

Loaner phone plan

If the repair takes days:

  1. Move WhatsApp officially if you need chat continuity.
  2. Forward calls / enable carrier apps on a spare if available.
  3. Keep 2FA on a spare or printed codes.
  4. Do not reuse weak temporary passwords across banks.

What “data loss risk” should say on a ticket

Good shops specify: screen‑only (data usually kept) vs board / water (data at risk). If the ticket is silent, ask them to write it. Silence is how “they promised” arguments start with no evidence.

Pickup testing script (print this)

Touch corners and edges → Face ID/fingerprint → cameras → mics (Voice Memos) → speaker → Wi‑Fi browse → cellular call → charge for 60 seconds → buttons → look for parts messages. Fail any item in the shop, not at home.

Cloud sync verification trick

Before drop‑off, open photos.google.com or iCloud.com on a computer and confirm today’s shots appear. A progress spinner on the phone is not verification. Same for the WhatsApp Last backup timestamp and authenticator export success.

DIY note for home openers

Prefer opening the device yourself? To separate a screen or back glass at home with less crack risk, I recommend a temperature-controlled LCD screen separator / preheat opener on Amazon instead of a hair dryer or hot-air gun. Work slowly — and still back up first; DIY never replaces a clean restore path.

Bottom line

Twenty minutes of prep beats a perfect OLED and an empty Photos app. Back up, migrate 2FA, document condition, control accounts, and test before you walk out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I tell the shop my passcode?

Only if diagnostics require it, and change it afterward. Prefer supervised drop-off where they use your presence for unlock when possible.

Do I need to turn off Find My / FRP?

Apple often requires Find My iPhone off for out-of-warranty logic board work. Android shops may need Google account cooperation for some motherboard swaps. Ask before you arrive.

Will repair erase my data?

Screen jobs usually keep data. Board swaps, water damage ultrasounds, and ‘reball’ work often mean data loss. Assume wipe unless promised otherwise in writing.

What about WhatsApp and authenticator apps?

Back up WhatsApp separately and migrate 2FA before drop-off. Those two cause the most post-repair heartbreak.

Can I leave the phone unlocked for testing?

If you must, remove banking widgets, lock finance apps, and migrate OTP authenticators first.
