MacBook Sticky Keys After Coffee or Soda? Clean vs Replace

Coffee and soda turn MacBook keyboards into glue traps. Water is bad; sugar is personal. Sticky keys after a drink are not a “wait for it to dry” problem — residue concentrates as moisture leaves, and corrosion risk continues underneath.

1. First moves (same hour as the spill)

1. Power off immediately — hold the power/Touch ID button until the Mac shuts down
2. Unplug MagSafe / USB-C charging
3. Blot visible liquid with lint-free cloth; do not wipe deeper into gaps
4. Invert carefully to encourage drainage away from the logic board when possible
5. Do not put the Mac in rice, an oven, or under a hairdryer

Why this matters: every sticky key press after a sugary spill grinds syrup further into scissor/butterfly mechanisms and toward the board.

2. Why air-only DIY usually fails on sugar

3. What you may do at home (and what you must not)

Allowed:

• Powered-off air dusting with the chassis tilted
• External Bluetooth/USB keyboard so you stop using the sticky deck
• Immediate backup to an external SSD if the Mac still boots
• Booking a shop the same week — do not wait a month “to see”

Not allowed if you care about the board:

• Dish soap, wet wipes, or kitchen sprays on the keyboard
• Pouring isopropyl through the keys on a closed MacBook
• Removing every keycap on a butterfly or modern Magic Keyboard-style deck without skills/parts
• Charging overnight while the deck is still damp
• “Cleaning mode” myths that keep the machine on

4. Clean vs topcase — how to decide

Ask any shop these questions:

1. Will you open and clean, or only quote a topcase?
2. Can I see photos of residue under the shields?
3. What is the quote if cleaning fails and a topcase is required?
4. Is data recovery prioritized if the board is contaminated?

Apple often replaces assemblies. Independents sometimes save a machine with proper cleaning. Neither path is free, and neither is guaranteed when sugar reached the logic board.

5. Backup while it still works

Sticky keys today can become no-boot tomorrow. If macOS still runs:

1. Copy Desktop, Documents, and Photos to a trusted external drive
2. Verify the copy opens on another machine if possible
3. Export browser password vaults / confirm your password manager syncs
4. Note Apple ID and FileVault password availability before handing the Mac over

6. Model-era caveats

• Butterfly mechanisms hated particles even without sugar; sugary liquid is especially unforgiving
• Magic Keyboard-style / scissor decks tolerate careful professional cleaning better, but topcase replacement remains common
• Apple silicon storage is soldered — board-level disaster is a data conversation, not a simple SSD transplant like some older Intel MacBook Pros

7. When to stop DIY and go to a shop

Stop immediately if:

• Keys are getting stickier days later
• You see discoloration under translucent keys or haze under the trackpad

• You already flooded cleaner into the keyboard

Bring the technician: liquid type (coffee/soda), approximate amount, time since spill, and whether it was powered on when it happened.

Interim workflow

Use an external keyboard, keep liquids off the new desk setup, and treat the MacBook as contaminated equipment until cleaned or topcased. Remapping keys in software will not unstick caramel.

Sugary spills are a cleaning-or-replace decision, not a patience test. Power down, stop typing through glue, back up, and pay for proper service before the sweet residue finishes the logic board.

Why “it got better after two days” can still be bad

Evaporation can temporarily improve key feel while concentrating residue underneath. A brief improvement is not clearance for heavy use. Keep the external keyboard and keep the appointment.

Isopropyl myths — scoped properly

Technicians use IPA during controlled disassembly with boards exposed and batteries disconnected. That is not permission to irrigate keycaps at your desk. Home IPA floods create new conductive paths toward the logic board.
