WhatsApp Calls Not Working on Android?

WhatsApp voice/video calls fail on Android 16 / One UI 8 — connecting forever, no ring, black video, permissions, battery restrictions, and when the mic/camera flex is next.

WhatsApp calls not working on Android after Android 16 / One UI 8 is almost always battery policy or permissions — chats keep moving, the call screen sits on Connecting…, or the phone never rings in a pocket. That is not Meta taking voice down.

Symptom map

Pattern Likely cause First move
Outgoing Connecting… forever Network / VPN / permission Airplane toggle; VPN off
Outgoing OK, incoming silent Battery / Sleeping apps Unrestricted; Never sleeping
Ring, then black video Camera permission or flex System Camera test
Audio call, no mic Mic permission or hardware Recorder app test
Wi‑Fi OK, LTE fails Carrier / 5G LTE test; other SIM
Clone app rings, main does not Dual Messenger Use one copy; Unrestrict both

1. Permissions WhatsApp actually needs

Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Permissions:

  • Microphone
  • Camera
  • Notifications (all categories, including Calls)
  • Phone (for ConnectionService / overlay on some OEMs)
  • Nearby devices / Bluetooth if you use BT headsets

Then inside WhatsApp: Settings → Notifications → Use high priority notifications (wording varies) and sounds On.

Android 16 notification permission is a one-shot prompt. If you denied it on first launch after the OS bump, calls will never surface.

Keep the phone off Deep sleep during the test — USB-C PD hub plus a proper brick so Device care does not immediately park the app.

2. Stop the OEM from eating incoming rings

This is the same family as delayed chat banners, but calls die first.

  • Samsung: Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Battery → Unrestricted; Device care → Battery → Never sleeping apps → add WhatsApp (and Galaxy Wearable if a watch is involved)
  • Pixel: Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Battery → Unrestricted
  • Xiaomi / HyperOS: Autostart On, all battery savers Off for WhatsApp

Turn Data saver exceptions on for WhatsApp. Dual Messenger / Dual WhatsApp: either Unrestrict the clone too or delete it — two copies split FCM and one of them never rings.

Full chat-delay playbook: WhatsApp notifications delayed.

3. Network is not “WhatsApp servers”

  • Airplane Mode 15 seconds
  • VPN off (work profiles break WhatsApp’s UDP)
  • Try the other network (Wi‑Fi vs LTE)
  • Weak 5G search also cooks the phone mid-call — Pixel 10 overheating / Android overheating
  • Private DNS / adblock hosts files that sinkhole WhatsApp STUN — disable for a test

WhatsApp calls are not carrier VoLTE. 4G data but no cellular calls is SIM 2 / blacklist — a different ticket.

4. Black video vs dead mic — software or hardware

Open the system Camera and the Recorder app.

System app WhatsApp Conclusion
Camera fine, WhatsApp black App cache / permission Clear WhatsApp cache; reinstall after backup
Camera black / “has stopped” Flex / module Samsung camerareseat, don’t default to a new module
Recorder fine, WhatsApp mute WhatsApp mic permission Re-grant; clear cache
Recorder dead too Mic hardware / board Repair path, not a WhatsApp setting

After a screen job, random other faults can still be a proximity / flex story on iPhone; on Samsung, a back-glass or camera job is the usual unseated FPC. Do not replace the camera because WhatsApp preview is black if Camera.app is also black — reseat first.

5. Cache, backup, reinstall

WhatsApp → Chat Backup before Delete.

Clear cache is safe. Clear data is a new registration.

Then update from Play Store. If Play itself is sick after Android 16: Play Store.

Desktop linked devices acting up: WhatsApp Desktop. iPhone in the same family: WhatsApp iOS 26.

Do / Don’t

Do Don’t
Unrestrict battery + all call notifications Clear data to “fix calls” without a backup
Test Camera.app and Recorder Buy a camera module because WhatsApp preview is black
VPN off, second network Blame Meta because One UI 8 put WhatsApp to sleep
One WhatsApp, not a starving clone Ignore Dual Messenger
Backup, then reinstall Factory reset the Galaxy on day one of Android 16

Bottom line

Permissions → Unrestricted / Never sleeping → Camera.app test → cache, not Clear data. WhatsApp calls on Android 16 fail because the OEM parked the app or the camera flex is unseated — not because chats still working means “the internet is fine.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Chats work, WhatsApp calls do not — is that WhatsApp down?

No. Chat is one socket; calls need mic/camera permission, Notification access for ringing, and the phone not sleeping the app. Android 16 / One UI 8 are aggressive about that.

Incoming calls never ring, outgoing work?

Battery restriction or Dual Messenger clone. Set WhatsApp to Unrestricted / Never sleeping and disable the clone if you do not use it.

Video is black, audio is fine?

Camera permission, or a hardware module/flex if the system Camera app is also black. Reseat first on Samsung — do not start with a new camera.

Works on Wi‑Fi, fails on LTE (or reverse)?

Carrier VoIP block or a bad 5G path. Test the other network; disable VPN. WhatsApp calls are not the same as cellular Voice over LTE.

iPhone WhatsApp calls are fine, Android is not?

Use the iOS WhatsApp guide for the iPhone. This page is OEM battery + permissions on Galaxy/Pixel.
