Google Maps Not Working on Android?

Google Maps spinning or grey after Android 16 / One UI 8 — location permission, Precise location, offline maps, Android Auto, and when GNSS vs a cache wipe is next.

Google Maps not working on Android after Android 16 / One UI 8 is permissions or grey tiles, not a dead GNSS chip until every location app is blind outdoors.

Symptom map

Pattern Likely cause Move
Blue dot spinning Precise / permission Location While using + Precise
Grey tiles, pin OK VPN / Data saver Second network; offline maps
Nav dies when you lock the phone Battery restriction Unrestricted / Never sleeping
Phone OK, Auto blank Android Auto Auto guide
After a Feature Drop Play Services cache Clear Maps + Play Services cache
All location apps dead GNSS / Location master off Hardware after a reboot test

1. Permissions Android 16 loves to reset

Settings → Apps → Maps → Permissions → LocationWhile using or Allowed all the time (nav in the background needs more than “Ask every time”). Precise location On.

Settings → Location On. Wi‑Fi scanning / Bluetooth scanning / Samsung Improve accuracy On. Turning those off “for privacy” makes the blue dot hunt in downtown canyons.

Keep the phone charged while tiles download — USB-C PD hub. Data saver plus Low Power look like a broken map.

2. Prove GNSS vs Google’s app

Outdoors:

  1. Compass / Samsung Compass / Pixel Measure — heading should move
  2. A second app (Apple-free: HERE, a store locator, even Camera geotag)
  3. Google Maps

Everything dead after reboot + Location master On: GNSS / board. Maps-only: cache.

Airplane Mode 15 seconds, then radios back on. Weak 5G search also cooks the SoC and stalls fused location — Pixel 10 heat / Android overheating. Try LTE for a commute.

3. Grey tiles are a CDN ticket

  • VPN off
  • Private DNS / adblock hosts that sinkhole Google
  • Data saver exception for Maps
  • Download offline maps on real Wi‑Fi

Clear cache (Maps). Clear data only if you accept re-login and lost offline packs.

Play Services stuck after Android 16: Settings → Apps → Google Play services → Clear cache (not data unless you know the fallout). Then Play Store if the store itself is dead.

4. Battery policy kills navigation

Samsung: Maps + Google app + Android Auto → Battery Unrestricted; Device care → Never sleeping.
Pixel: Adaptive Battery exceptions.

This is the same OEM parking that silences WhatsApp calls. Nav that dies every time the screen sleeps is not GPS.

Android Auto blank maps: cable, wireless module, Unrestrict — Android Auto. Do not “calibrate GPS” for a charge-only USB cable.

5. After a drop or screen

Location weird after a screen or board job can be an antenna/flex seating issue — same discipline as camera flex: reseat before replacing the module. Shop backup habits: before sending for repair.

Do / Don’t

Do Don’t
Precise On + Improve accuracy Recalibrate GPS for a VPN
Second app outdoors Clear data before cache
Unrestrict Maps / Android Auto Factory reset on day one of One UI 8
Offline maps on Wi‑Fi Blame GNSS for grey tiles
LTE test if 5G is cooking Replace the motherboard because Auto was blank

Bottom line

Precise location → second app outdoors → cache/offline maps → Unrestrict battery. Android Maps after 16 / One UI 8 is permissions and an OEM sleeper until every location app is blind. Then it is hardware — not a new Google Maps outage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Blue dot spinning after One UI 8 / Android 16 — dead GPS?

Usually Location permission set to Ask every time, Precise location off, or Play Services still indexing. Test Compass / a second map app outdoors. Both dead after a reboot is GNSS hardware.

Tiles grey, pin is fine?

Network / VPN / Data saver — not GPS. Same class as Instagram CDN failures. Download offline maps on Wi‑Fi.

Works on the phone, blank in Android Auto?

Android Auto battery limits or the car module. Do not replace the GNSS chip for a head-unit handshake.

Clear cache safe?

Yes. Clear data logs you out of Google Maps and drops offline packs — use cache first.

Samsung vs Pixel differences?

Samsung Location / Improve accuracy and Sleeping apps. Pixel Adaptive Battery. Same permission sheet underneath.
