Chrome Spinners on iPhone After iOS 26?

Chrome on iPhone spinner, crash, or signed out after iOS 26 / 26.6 — Safari comparison, iCloud Private Relay, content blockers, account sync, and when Offload is enough.

Chrome not working on iPhone after iOS 26 is usually a Google token, a WebKit hang, or the phone still indexing — not “Google killed Chrome on iOS.” Safari is the control test. Desktop Chrome is a different article.

Symptom map

Pattern Likely cause Move
Chrome spins, Safari fine Chrome cache / account Sign in; Offload
Safari also 10–30s 26.6 indexing Wait; Safari guide
Signed out / sync empty Token after OS bump Sign in once
One site only Blocker / cookies Reload; site data
VPN on = dead Filter / TLS VPN off
Desktop Chrome also dead Not this page Desktop Chrome

1. Safari first — always

Open the same URL in Safari. If Safari crawls, Chrome will too until 26.6 indexing finishes. Plug in (USB-C PD hub); do not Offload Chrome on 8% during Spotlight.

Safari Reload Without Content Blockers. Blockers can hit Chrome’s WKWebView too.

2. Account and sync

Chrome → profile → sign in with the Google account you actually use. Bookmarks and tab sync come back from the cloud. A second “I made a new Gmail” is how people think 26.6 deleted history.

Gmail banners late is Gmail on iPhone, not Chrome tabs.

3. Network extras that only break Chrome

  • VPN off
  • iCloud Private Relay off for a test
  • Low Data Mode off
  • Captive Wi‑Fi — iPhone Wi‑Fi

YouTube.com in Chrome dead, YouTube app fine: Chrome cookies. Both dead: YouTube iOS 26.

4. Offload, not a new Google account

App Store → Update. Settings → iPhone Storage → Chrome → Offload App. Sign in again.

In-app: Chrome Settings → Privacy → Clear browsing data (cached images) before a full history wipe. Reset Settings if tabs still hang.

Desktop Windows/Mac still broken: Chrome pages not loading — extensions and profiles, not iOS 26.

5. Default browser and Handoff

Settings → Apps → Chrome → Default Browser App if you expected Chrome from links. Handoff from Mac Safari to iPhone Chrome will not happen — different browsers.

Do / Don’t

Do Don’t
Safari control test Offload Chrome during 26.6 night-one indexing
Sign in before Offload Create a second Google account
VPN / Relay off Treat desktop Chrome as this bug
Clear cache before history Restore the iPhone for a hung tab
Wait if Safari is slow Blame Google for Spotlight

Bottom line

Safari test → wait out indexing → sign in → Offload Chrome. iPhone Chrome after iOS 26 is a WebKit shell and a Google token. The desktop DNS article is the wrong rabbit hole until Edge/Safari on the PC are also dead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Chrome tabs spin, Safari is fine after iOS 26.6?

Chrome-specific: account token, Chrome flags, or a hung WKWebView. If Safari is also slow, wait out indexing first — that is not a Chrome bug.

Chrome signed me out after the update?

Common. Sign in again. Sync will restore tabs/bookmarks from the Google account. Do not create a second account.

Is this the same as desktop Chrome pages not loading?

No. Desktop has extensions, profiles, and DoH. iPhone Chrome is a WebKit shell plus a Google account. Use the desktop guide for Windows/Mac Chrome.

YouTube in Chrome fails, YouTube app works?

Then Chrome’s network/cookies are the issue. If both fail, see the YouTube iOS 26 guide.

Will Offload Chrome delete bookmarks?

If you were signed in, bookmarks live on the Google account. Local-only bookmarks without sign-in can vanish — sign in first.
