Find My / AirTag Stuck After iOS 26?

Find My stuck updating, AirTag offline, or People tab empty after iOS 26 / 26.6 — Location Services, Apple ID, network, and when an AirTag needs a battery vs a reset.

10 min readFind My, iOS 26, AirTag

Find My not working after iOS 26 is usually a permission or the other device is asleep, not Apple deleting the network. 26.6 indexing makes the map look frozen while iCloud is still catching up.

Symptom map

What you see Likely cause First move
This iPhone: No location Find My / Location off Apple ID → Find My On
Other iPhone stale That phone offline / Low Power Ask them to open Find My on Wi‑Fi
People empty Sharing stopped Invite again; check Hide
AirTag hours stale No crowd nearby / battery Play Sound; then CR2032
App crash on launch 26.6 cache Offload Find My
Map grey, location OK Same CDN class as Maps Network; wait indexing

1. This iPhone has to announce itself

Settings → [your name] → Find My:

  • Find My iPhone On
  • Find My network On
  • Send Last Location On

Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services On. Find My → While Using or Always (Find My needs to wake). System Services related to Find My / significant locations as you prefer — but a master Location Off makes the whole tab fiction.

Date & Time Automatic. A wrong clock after travel breaks iCloud the same way it breaks FaceTime.

Stay on power + Wi‑Fi while 26.6 finishes — USB-C PD hub. Low Power Mode plus indexing looks like “Find My is down.”

2. Prove the account on the web

On a computer: icloud.com/find (or the current Find web UI) signed into the same Apple ID.

  • Devices appear on the web, not in the app → Offload the Find My app
  • Nothing on the web either → Apple ID / network, not the map renderer
  • Web shows the missing phone in another country you didn’t visit → still the account; check Family / leftover device list

Do not turn Find My iPhone Off to refresh the map. That is how Activation Lock stories get worse.

3. People vs Devices vs Items

People: they must share with you, you with them. Hide My Location in the app empties their view of you, not your device list. Family Sharing ≠ automatic People share.

Devices: Watch, iPad, Mac must be signed into the same Apple ID (or Family). A Watch on a different Apple ID will not show. Watch BT glitches after 26.6: Watch unlock.

Items (AirTag / accessories): crowd-sourced. A bag in a closet for two days looks offline. Play Sound. Then battery. Then reset in Find My → Items → Remove. Re-pair next to the iPhone. A drowned AirTag is hardware.

4. Network, VPN, and paused iCloud

VPN / work MDM can block Apple’s Find endpoints. Test off.

If iCloud Photos is Paused and Safari is crawling, the whole iCloud plane is busy — Photos paused, Safari. Wait overnight before signing out.

Grey map tiles with a working blue-dot-elsewhere: Google Maps / location permissions overlap, but Find My still needs Apple ID.

5. Offload, then sign-out last

Settings → iPhone Storage → Find My → Offload. Reopen.

Sign out of Apple ID only after a backup, on a charger, knowing Photos/iMessage will nag. It is a valid last software step. A restore is not a Find My fix on update night.

Do / Don’t

Do Don’t
Check iCloud.com/find first Turn Find My off to “refresh”
Location Services On for Find My Unpair every AirTag because the house was quiet
Play Sound, then battery Sign out of Apple ID on 8% battery
Split People / Devices / Items Assume 26.6 deleted the Find network
Wait out indexing Restore the iPhone for a stale People tab

Bottom line

Find My iPhone On → Location Services → iCloud.com/find → split People vs AirTags. After iOS 26 the map lies while iCloud is busy. Signing out is last. Turning Find My off to fix a spinner is how you lose Activation Lock when you actually need it.

Charge the iPhone (and a Watch if it is part of the People tab) on a known brick farm: SABRENT VOLTIK 252W 8-port station on Amazon. If you wanted a cellular Watch as a Find My companion anyway, a renewed Apple Watch SE 2 (GPS + Cellular) on Amazon is the hardware path — Wrist Detection still has to be On.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find My says No location found after iOS 26.6?

Usually Location Services off for Find My, the other device is offline, or iCloud is still indexing. Check iCloud.com/find on a computer before you assume the phone vanished.

AirTag last seen hours ago — dead battery?

AirTags update when an Apple device walks by. A quiet house can look ‘dead.’ Play Sound first. Then battery. Then reset/re-pair.

People tab empty but Devices work?

Family Sharing / friend requests, not GNSS. Confirm they still share location with you and that you did not hide your own location.

Will signing out of Apple ID fix Find My?

It can, and it also signs you out of Photos, iMessage, and Activation Lock complexity. Do it last, on power, after a backup.

Stolen device mode / Activation Lock confusion?

Find My must stay on for Activation Lock. Do not turn Find My off to ‘fix the map’ on a phone you might lose.
